Week of April 27th: Classes and Events at Craftfolk

Beginners mind...

As we wrap up our third month of classes at Craftfolk, I find myself reflecting on not just the breadth and variety of the class content, but also how much I've enjoyed learning along side you all. From painting and mixed media to knitting, leather craft, and botanicals, our hands-on classes bring people from all over the community to create together. I also continue to be inspired by everyone who shows up for Craft Club each week, bringing new ideas and examples of their work.

One new craft I've been pursuing in earnest is watercolors, thanks to Nicole Lescher and her wonderful introductory class offered last month. I took oil painting classes in college, and find the restraint needed for watercolor challenging, so have avoided it in the past. I am trying to pursue this new craft with a beginners mind, and am enjoying the process of seeking light and shadows to paint an object, which also helps me view the world in a new way.

I picked up fired the plates from the Fork & Palette event at the pottery studio this week and love seeing everyone's creations come to life in full and vibrant colors. Note: I sent a separate email to everyone who painted a plate with us with directions for picking them up this week.

We are already dreaming up our next community pottery painting night, so stay tuned for more events coming up this summer and fall.

Speaking of events... our next collaborative event with Snapdragon Provisions will be a Summer Soiree on June 13th. We will have live music, mocktails, small bites, and a flower bar where you can create your own bud vase of fresh seasonal flowers. Reserve your space for the flower bar for $10, or you can purchase at the door ($15) while supplies last. Save the date and we hope to see you then.

We will have Craft Club at our usual time and place this week (Thursday, April 30, 4-6pm at the studio, 38 N. Main Street, rear entrance). I will be out of town next week, so there will be no Craft Club on May 7.

We are moving Craft Club outdoors to the Colfax Farmer's Market (just 1 block away) starting on May 14th. All the dates are listed on the website, so be sure to check here if you have any questions about dates or the location. Bring your own project and chair and join us to craft in community. We will provide tables and treats to share.

Coming up this week:

This is the last call to sign up for our Handbuilt Ceramic Planters: An Introduction to Clay workshop with Simone this weekend (Saturday, May 2). Registration closes on Thursday and we hope you will join us.

Class info:
Join us for a hands-on introduction to hand building with clay, where you'll learn foundational ceramic techniques to create your own planter pot. Working with a mix of methods, we'll guide you through the basics of shaping and building with clay from start to finish. You'll create a finished piece ready for the kiln. We'll handle the firing after class and your completed planter will be ready for pickup within a few weeks.

All materials provided. No prior experience needed.

Or full May and June class calendars are now posted and we are continuing to add new classes for the summer months, including sewing, visible mending, felted purses, and cheese making! Be sure to check out the CLASS CALENDAR on our website to see all upcoming offerings.

Wishing you a creative week and hope to see you soon,
Gretchen

Yesterday we explored the basics of block printing with Jill McCann. Jill introduced us to the tools of the trade, including brayers, cutting tools, barrens, rubber blocks, and inks/paints. She showed us how to cut sample blocks using an assortment of lines and textures, and then we each cut a design of our choice to stamp on various papers and fabric. I've always wanted to learn this craft and will definitely be incorporating it into my collage and sewing practices (I'm dreaming of hand-made...

Yesterday's The Rose Apothecary workshop was a full rose immersion! We surrounded ourselves with fresh rose petals, drank cold infused rose tea; and made rose honey, rose tea blends, rose infused oil and lip balm. We explored all parts of the rose, its petals, hips and thorns. We talked about how information about plants was passed down through generations via the oral tradition in fairytales and folktales. Rose is featured prominently in Sleeping Beauty (aka. Little Brier Rose, first...

This month I'm trying to revive my home garden, which I have neglected as I've been getting Craftfolk off the ground. In between weeding sessions, I'm enjoying the last flush of spring roses and have been harvesting and drying fresh petals each week to save for tea and other uses through the summer and fall. I am expecting a shipment of fresh rose petals from the Sonoma County Herb Exchange (an amazing resource for fresh organic herbs) this week in preparation for The Rose Apothecary workshop...
