Week of May 11th: Classes and Events at Craftfolk
Published 29 days ago • 3 min read
While attending the California Preservation Foundation conference last week, I had the privilege of touring the Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation. Maloof was an influential furniture designer in the mid- to late- 20th century and the home that he shared with his wife and business partner, Alfreda, contains a remarkable collection spanning his entire career. The Maloofs were devoted supporters of the arts and their collection of pottery, stained glass, painting, sculpture, and other works are carefully curated throughout the house.

Our tour was led by Larry White, Maloof's first assistant and a significant furniture designer and craftsman in his own right. Larry shared how Maloof would work on the same chair design for decades, slightly tweaking the shape of the arms, the support of the back rest, and the thickness of the spindles, until he felt it was perfect. He continued the pursuit of mastery right up until his death at age 93 in 2009.

We were also fortunate to hear from another of Maloof's apprentices, Mike Johnson, who continues the business as Sam Maloof Woodworker with his son and wife, creating new pieces according to Maloof's designs and restoring originals.

What struck me most about the tour was the joy evident in everyone connected to the foundation, from their current staff to the architects and designers who preserved the house, to Larry and Mike who carry Maloof's legacy forward. The care, appreciation, and love not only for the craft itself but also for the people involved, was a powerful reminder of how deeply craft can shape a life and community.
My goal is to create a space where individuals can explore their creativity in community. I hope Craftfolk gives each of you a place to learn, grow, and pursue your own craft over a lifetime.

Yesterday we explored the basics of block printing with Jill McCann. Jill introduced us to the tools of the trade, including brayers, cutting tools, barrens, rubber blocks, and inks/paints. She showed us how to cut sample blocks using an assortment of lines and textures, and then we each cut a design of our choice to stamp on various papers and fabric. I've always wanted to learn this craft and will definitely be incorporating it into my collage and sewing practices (I'm dreaming of hand-made...
Yesterday's The Rose Apothecary workshop was a full rose immersion! We surrounded ourselves with fresh rose petals, drank cold infused rose tea; and made rose honey, rose tea blends, rose infused oil and lip balm. We explored all parts of the rose, its petals, hips and thorns. We talked about how information about plants was passed down through generations via the oral tradition in fairytales and folktales. Rose is featured prominently in Sleeping Beauty (aka. Little Brier Rose, first...
This month I'm trying to revive my home garden, which I have neglected as I've been getting Craftfolk off the ground. In between weeding sessions, I'm enjoying the last flush of spring roses and have been harvesting and drying fresh petals each week to save for tea and other uses through the summer and fall. I am expecting a shipment of fresh rose petals from the Sonoma County Herb Exchange (an amazing resource for fresh organic herbs) this week in preparation for The Rose Apothecary workshop...
